Jim Giffin passes away; special election

Dear Supporters,

I wanted to let you all know that Jim Giffin the District X vice-president passed away last Sunday January 31st. The news was posted here on the AMA website. Anyone wishing to send sympathy cards can send them to;

Jim's passing will require that the AMA conduct a special election to choose a new vice-president. Many of you have expressed strong feelings on how the vacancy should be filled; namely you feel I should be appointed to the position since Jim and I essentially received the same number of votes in the recent election. That is not going to be possible. The AMA bylaws require that each District Vice-President identify one of their Associate Vice-Presidents to step in, in cases such as this. Mike Brown was the AVP Jim chose to be his alternate.

Traditionally special elections are held at the same time as a regular election with voting in October and November. While this is tradition, it is not required. The Executive Council has the authority to call a special election at anytime. I have had discussions with our President Dave Mathewson on this issue, he has committed to thinking this issue over and may raise it next week at a discussion the Executive Council will be having on this and other issues.

If you are in favor of having a special election now rather than later to fill the District X Vice-President's position here's what you can do. Since you are all leaders in the clubs that provided the most support to me please encourage your members to send an email to Dave Mathewson at president@modelaircraft.org or our AMA Executive Director Jim Cherry at jcherry@modelaircraft.org asking that a special election be held now rather than in October. I have found Dave and Jim to be open and honest and more than happy to discuss important issues like this one we face now. Please ask that all emails be constructive and respectful.

While I feel genuinely sorry about Jim Giffin's passing, the issue of when we hold a special election does not allow time to pass before acting. I beleive that given a significant amount of positive feedback from AMA members we will have a special election now rather than later, but time is of the essence and we must act today.

Great Flying Saturday

We had a wonderful day of flying today in case you were not able to be there. The weather turned out to be great.

The Christmas raffle plane had its outstanding maiden flight today. Dylan Cerven piloted the craft and ran it through it's paces. Sven Sedleniek is the craftsman that assembled the plane and took the plane back to his work shop to put on the finishing touches so that some lucky flyer can win the raffle next Saturday at our Christmas party. We thank all how have helped with this project, especially those that have purchased the tickets and those that are yet to purchase tickets. IT IS A GREAT PLANE. Just so you know, the proceeds from the raffles go to support the club.

The Slow Stick exercises (competitions) were the Dead Stick and the Bomb Drop that have become familiar to our competitors at our monthly catered free lunches. I used the terms CATERED LUNCHES freely but our chef and assistant chef, Dennis Souza and Frank Ross respectively spend a lot of time working to put on the spread.

We need to have you complete the attached 2010 renewal form. This form has more information requested on it than the old short form included in the November newsletter, so please complete the attached form for us. The attached form has numerous membership options, email addresses and other requested information that will help us serve you. The document follows:

Next we also need a copy of your 2010 AMA membership card showing your AMA membership number.

The last item needed is your signed LA County Safety letter prepared by Chris Graham. many of you have already furnished the executed document and, if you have, we have already forwarded copies of those letters to the County of LA and you do not need to provide another, but if you have not given us the executed Letter, your membership will be delayed until you have resolved that document or any other requested item. The document follows:

Subject: Theft Alert

If you could forward the following information to your members, it would
be greatly appreciated. I am a member of the Corona RC Club and my truck
was broken into and cleaned out probably Sunday night. The attachment is
a detailed list of what was taken. They will probably attempt to sell it
at one of our flying fields.

Additional identifying information is as follows:
       My AMA number 94358 is on the big Kadet Senior
       The radio and the big Kadet have homemade Eneloop battery packs.
       I did have ID stickers in the planes and on the wings, but those
have probably been removed.

City of Hope Good News

UPDATE 10/19/09
WOW!!, we are up to $1,220.00 total contribution from club members and
our matching fund. We have decided to continue receiving donations at
our float fly this Saturday, the 24th, and Sunday the 25th. WOW!!

Good news, today we received additional donations for the City of Hope
Walk A Thon. We have now collected $370.00 from club members, the
total to date is, with the matching funds, $740.00. We were reminded
today that the City of Hope has a corporate sponsor that will match
our donations. You are all doing us proud.
